How to install on Linux
Generate a step-by-step setup guide for a GitHub repository. Paste the repo URL into GitManual or change github.com to gitmanual.com in the URL.

Will it work on my device?
CONTRIBUTING.mdThanks for helping more people get open source running. Every fixed rule fixes the manual for many repos at once.
If gitmanual gave a wrong step, command or "Will it work?" answer for a repo, open a "Wrong setup" issue with:
That's often all a fix needs.
npm install
npm run dev # http://localhost:3000
npm run typecheck
npm run build
npm run check:scripts # setup scripts for every repo you've looked up
Add a GITHUB_TOKEN to .env.local if you'll be looking up many repos (how). After a rule change, open the repos it affects: saved analyses are re-made automatically when VERSION in lib/pipeline.ts is bumped, so bump it when a change alters results.
| To fix… | Look in |
|---|---|
| A stack, version or framework that isn't detected | lib/detect.ts, and lib/os.ts for how to install it on each system |
| The wrong download picked from a release | lib/install.ts (classifyOs, classifyArch, KINDS) |
| An install command missed, or a dependency shown as the app | lib/install.ts (METHODS, installsThisProject) |
| README sections, tools or troubleshooting tips | lib/readme.ts (TOOLS, TIPS) |
| "Start here": setup guides, scripts, docs links | lib/guides.ts |
| "Will it work on my device?" | lib/fit.ts, and lib/platforms.ts for what READMEs say about systems |
| The setup script (setup.sh / setup.ps1) | lib/script.ts; repos it's tested on: scripts/setup-test-repos.json |
| The UI | app/, following DESIGN.md |
npm run typecheck, npm run build and npm run check:scripts -- --add pass (CI checks all three). The Setup scripts workflow also runs the scripts, built from your branch, on real macOS, Windows and Linux machines: on pull requests that touch lib/, and weekly. To see one script: npm run -s setup-script -- owner/repo linux. The Accuracy run workflow runs the scripts for 100 random shelf repos (scripts/accuracy-sample.json) and reports the pass rate. Then run bash setup.sh. It stops at the first error and is safe to run again. Servers and tests aren't started; it lists them at the end. Read it first.
git clone https://github.com/zainudinnoori/gitmanual.git cd gitmanual
Node.js >=20.9
# needs nvm: https://github.com/nvm-sh/nvm nvm install --lts
Optional, add them when you need them: GITHUB_TOKEN, TURSO_AUTH_TOKEN, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, FB_PAGE_TOKEN, CRON_SECRET
cp .env.example .env.local
npm ci
npm run dev
Requires Node.js 20.9+. Or follow gitmanual's own manual, with steps and a setup script for your system.
git clone https://github.com/zainudinnoori/gitmanual.git
cd gitmanual
npm install
cp .env.example .env.local # optional: add a GITHUB_TOKEN (recommended)
npm run dev
Open http://localhost:3000 and paste a repo. Without any settings it works out of the box: history is kept in a local SQLite file (data/gitmanual.db), and GitHub allows about 20 new repos an hour. A GitHub token raises that to thousands.
| Command | Does |
|---|---|
| npm run dev | Development server |
| npm run build / npm start | Production build and server |
| npm run typecheck | Type check |
| npm run check:scripts | Build and check the setup script of every repo in the local database (-- --add also analyzes the test list) |
